People who eat the most red meat — which can have high levels of cholesterol-rising saturated fat — were 27% more likely to die of heart disease. Serious meat eaters were also 20% more likely to die of cancer than those who consumed the least amount of meat. So what’s the magic number? One study says no more than 18 ounces a week, and if you manage even less, all the better.

Stop. The. Presses. THE Royal Couple, William & Catherine, flew a commercial flight home to London from Los Angeles on British Airways at the end of their official visit to North America. They opted not to fly home on a private jet (which they flew to Ottawa on June 30th) and instead hopped a commercial flight. Granted, the duo sat in first class on the London-bound flight, the Daily Mail reports, but they were amongst civilian travelers nonetheless.

Hackers broke into the FoxNewsPolitics account early Monday, leaving a series of six tweets reporting that Obama had been shot to death in Iowa and the shooter was unknown. The Secret Service said Monday it will investigate the hacking of Fox’s political Twitter account over updates claiming that President Barack Obama had been assassinated. In a statement posted on its website, Fox News called the tweets “malicious” and “false.”

Freak, Tragic Amtrak Accident

I’ve traveled on the Amtrak and always thought it the safest way to travel, but freak accidents can always happen. Five people remained unaccounted for following a fiery crash involving a big rig and an Amtrak train in the Nevada desert, but investigators say they’ve yet to find any more bodies in the wreck that left six dead. The driver of the truck, a conductor and four others on the train were killed when the semi-trailer truck plowed into the California Zephyr at a highway crossing about 70 miles east of Reno. The big rig, the lead in a three-truck convoy, skidded about 320 feet before smashing through the crossing gates.

In home care for my dad was the best decision my brother and I ever made; we live many hours away from him and we just couldn’t bear to move him in with us and take him away from the only area he’d ever known or cared to live. He doesn’t require 24/7 assistance, so we found a local home care agency to help out a few hours a day so my dad can still stay at his home and still spend time with the friends he’s had all of his adult life. It’s given my brother and I peace of mind that he’s taken care of and still able to lead a full and happy life.

Huma Abedin, wife of Congressman Anthony Weiner, has worked for Hillary Clinton for years — and she is so close to the Clinton family that the former president officiated at her wedding. Politico reported yesterday: “The Clintons are furious and want no contact with Weiner. But they are deeply supportive and protective of Abedin.” How’s that for the pot calling the kettle black? What Weiner did was far less offensive than Bill’s fall from grace in the Oval Office. As far as we know, Weiner didn’t have physical relations with any of the women he interacted with, and he didn’t have an inappropriate relationship with someone who was working for him, either.

My close friend recently visited one of the top spine surgeons in the country in Los Angeles and had a bulging disc repaired. He’s an incredibly active guy and in recent months was nearly crippled from excruciating pain. It’s been six weeks since his surgery and I can’t believe his improvement; he’s not back to hiking and cycling and kayaking yet, but I’m sure he soon will be! It just goes to show what a little research, a willingness to travel, and one amazing spine surgeon can do!
